In 1974, the passionate golfers of Soweto came together to form the first golf club in one of the world’s most iconic township’s entrenched in rich political and cultural history.
From 1974 the members played on sandy greens, in 1977-1978 was the beginning of a new era where by grass green were planted.
Building up from old conversations lead by Justice Matshaya with the commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, a breakthrough was realised in the year 2017 when the Sunshine Tour Executive Director Selwyn Nathan agreed to build the legacy and instantly spear-headed the complete revitalisation of Soweto Country Club which included the 18 hole golf course, half-way house and club house, which in recent years had struggled for survival.
Today Soweto Country Club is fully integrated into the South African golf community in the form of hosting professional golf tournaments and corporate pro-ams, making it an economically viable asset of both Gauteng and African tourism.
With the support of the City of Johannesburg, the new Soweto Country Club serves as a prime flagship project of township economy. Our club is a true reflection of the magic that happens when government and private sector come together to bring about radical change within the South African society.
Soweto Country Club is now in the best position to produce young professional golfers that can compete on any world stage and to host international golf tournaments. We currently have professional golfers playing on the Sunshine Tour and looking forward to producing many more.
